Antequera

Antequera (pop. 41,000), located 2.5 hours from Sevilla by train, is most famous for its whitewashed houses spread out below the city. It is also famous for its pre-Roman dólmenes (funerary caves built from rock slabs), which are the oldest in Europe. The Cueva de Menga was built around 2500 B.C. and contains four engravings of Mediterranean Stone Age Art. The Cueva de Viera (2000 B.C.) was uncovered in 1905 and has a narrow passageway leading deep into the earth.
