COURSES

The History of Indigenous Australia: This course explores the initial human settlement of Sahul (Greater Australia) from the earliest colonization down to the beginning of the Holocene period 10,000 years ago, when rising sea levels separated New Guinea and Tasmania from mainland Australia.

Environmental Studies: Wilderness & Sustainable Development: This course focuses on conservation of natural and cultural values, as well as their use for nature-based tourism. Major themes are conservation management; changing concepts of national parks; conservation of human and cultural values in natural areas; cultural heritage; tourism management & education; and technical services, just to name a few.

Contemporary Australian Literature & Film: This course centers on the comparison of major Australian literary texts and films, using these texts to provoke a debate on important issues concerning Australia’s present, past and future. The course examines the way a small selection of Australian creative writing attempt to map an imaginary, but real nation.

Spinning Yarns: Media & Message in Australia: This course considers the social and cultural significance of communication and the media in contemporary Australian society. The program will provide a general overview and introduction to message creation in film, television, radio, journalism and multimedia while discussing the media environment, media industries and cultural and communication context in Australia.

Optional: The Edge of the Outback: This subject consists of a Photographic journey exploring a regional Australian outback landscape using the mediums of Photography, Printmaking and Multimedia. The workshop is designed to develop the students’ visual thinking and to introduce them to individual visual problem solving related to the media. The expected cost for this 3-week course is $2,000.
