Figueres is on the Costa Brava, located on the Mediterranean. The Costa Brava covers the coast from Barcelona to the French border. The Costa Brava's jagged cliffs and pristine beaches draw throngs of tourists, especially in July and August.
In the heart of Catalonia, Figueres once played a key role in Spanish history. Figueres is located about an hour and a half from Barcelona by train. Philip V wed María Luisa of Savoy here in 1701 in the church of San Pedro, thereby paving the way for the War of the Spanish Succession. The town is better known as the birthplace of surrealist artist Salvador Dalí in 1904. You'll visit the Teatre-Museu Dalí in Figueres, Dalí's personally designed museum/monument to himself, which is a multimedia museum of sculpture, painting, music, and architecture.
