Toledo (pop. 65,000) is located an hour and a half south of Madrid by train. To someone who loves architecture, Toledo is paradise. Toledo has been successively a Roman settlement, capital of the Visigoth kingdom, stronghold of the Emirate of Córdoba, and imperial city under Carlos V. Toledo produced swords for most of medieval Europe, and conquistadors such as Francisco Pizarro. The city's numerous churches, synagogues, and mosques evoke a time when Spain's three religions coexisted peacefully. Don't forget to sample Toledo's famous almond-paste marzipan, made in every shape, color, and size.
