Les Baux de Provence is a small town in the mountains of southern France. Traces of habitation have been found that date as far back as 6000 BC. It was settled so early because it's position in the mountains meant that it would be a very easy city to defend. It was used by the Celts in the second century BC. During the middle ages it was the home of a feudal leadership that controlled 79 towns and villages in the immediate area. Nowadays, the village relies mainly on tourism. It has gained the reputation as one of the prettiest villages in France, but with a current population of only 500 it is a shadow of the great village it once was, when the population was 4,000.
