Cork (p. 123,062) is the principal city of the County Cork, it is located on the southern Irish Coast. It is the third largest city in Ireland, behind Dublin and Belfast. The city's name is from the Irish word "corcach" which means marshy place. The River Lee flows through the city into Lough Mahon and Cork Harbour. Cork Harbour is one of the world's largest natural harbours. In 1491, some townspeople attempted to overthrow the King of England, and since then Cork was heavily involved in the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. Because of this Cork County is often called "Rebel County", and natives of Cork will often claim it to be the "true capitol of Ireland".
Cork has a vibrant cultural life. It has in recent years been gaining much cultural diversity, and this in apparent in the multi-cultural restaurants and shops along the main streets of Cork. The Cork School of Music, The University College Cork, and the Crawford College of Art and Design ensure that there is a constant flux of students. There are many festivals in Cork, such as a jazz festival as well as a film festival that emphasizes the importance of short films.
