Galway (p. 65,832, is the main city of the province of Connacht and the capitol of county Galway. The city is on the west coast, and the River Corrib flows through the town. Galway has a complicated history that stretches back roughly 800 years. Galway was first ruled by 14 merchant families, but the town was overtaken after a siege by Cromwell's English forces. Since then, the history of Galway is largely a story of the struggle between the native Irish and the English. Galway was once the main port for trade with the Spanish and French.
Now, Galway is a very important city in Ireland. It is often called the "Bi-Lingual Capitol of Ireland" due to the amount of people who speak Celtic as well as English. There are many landmarks in Galway such as the Church of Ireland St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church, the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas, the National University of Ireland, Galway, and the Galway Harbour just to name a few. There are many festivals as well, such as the Cúirt International Festival of Literature, Galway Early Music Festival, Super8 Size It 8mm festival and the Galway Arts Festival.
