ASA Program in London, England

Housing Update: 2009-2010 Academic Year

During the 2009-2010 Academic Year, Regent's College will be renovating the Reid Hall dormitory. One half of Reid Hall will be under construction during the Fall semester and the other half in the Spring.

Since the renovations will result in diminished housing availability, Regent's College has secured off-campus housing within a 20-minute walk from campus. Due to potential construction noise in Reid Hall, we have decided to place 2009-2010 ASA students in the off-campus housing at The Landward apartments.

Location
The Landward is located an easy 20-minute walk or 5-minute bus ride from the Regent's College campus, just off Edgware Road at Harrowby Street (postal code W1H 5HB).

The Landward is located in London's West End, a lively area of London close to Hyde Park, Oxford Street and Marble Arch - London's major shopping districts. This zone has everything the students will need, including pharmacies, supermarkets, restaurants, banks, and much more. Its central location and proximity to the college make it an ideal off-campus housing option.

The nearest Tube stations to The Landward are Edgware Road (yellow and brown lines) and Marble Arch (red line). There are also approximately 6 different bus lines that run nearby.

Apartments and Roommates
The Landward has 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, and the Regent's College block will house 61 students. Bedrooms are double and triple occupancy. Most students will be placed in single sex apartments, but a few apartments may be coed in some instances. The 2-bedroom apartments have one double and one triple room, for a total of 5 housemates. Each 2-bedroom apartment has 1.5 baths - the full bath has a tub/shower and toilet and the half bath has a toilet. Please communicate your preference of a single sex or coed apartment and we will do our best to accommodate your preference, but please keep in mind that no preference can be guaranteed.

Meal Plan
Students will continue to have a full meal plan on campus included with the ASA program fees. The full meal plan includes £60 (approx. $110) per week to spend in the Regent's College refectory. The refectory is open for all meals except Saturday dinner.

Since the apartments have a fully equipped kitchen, ASA students will also have the option of choosing a half board plan which will provide you with £30 (approx. $55) per week to spend in the refectory. Students who opt for the half board option will receive a discount of $708 off their ASA program fees.

Amenities
Each apartment includes:
  • Bedrooms are double and triple occupancy and may be single sex or coed; 5 students and 1.5 baths per 2-bedroom apartment
  • 33 hours per week of wireless Internet access (Students must pay for additional Internet access beyond 33 hours per week.)
  • Spacious lounge (living room) with a TV and DVD or VCR
  • Fully equipped kitchen with a washer/dryer, range, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator and freezer (Please note that washers and dryers are different in Europe; the dryers will not completely dry your clothes.)
  • Bed linens and pillow (Students must bring their own towels.)
  • Weekly cleaning service (includes laundering of linens)
  • A safe in each apartment to hold your passport and other valuables
  • 24-hour reception
  • Landward manager and Resident Assistant from Regent's College to live on site
  • Landline telephone to which incoming calls are free; outgoing calls to 0800 numbers are free; other outgoing calls may be made with a calling card
  • Central heating
  • Elevator
  • Orientation meeting after arrival to explain all housing policies
  • Social calendar including weekly events at discounted rates. Past events have included visits to the Tower of London, day trips to other cities, walking tours (i.e. Jack the Ripper tour, the Da Vinci trail) and tickets to various theatre/musical productions. Look for flyers in the apartment hallways for details on how to purchase tickets.

Safety
The Landward is operated by Anglo American Educational Services. The Landward is located in a safe area of London, in close proximity to Regent's College. There will be a Landward manager and a Resident Assistant from Regent's College living on site who are available to assist students with any housing issues or questions that arise, as well as assist in case of emergency.

In addition, Anglo American has a 24-hour emergency number which is given to all students. This is a freephone (0800) number, so the call is free from a UK landline. Students are also offered access to an on-call cell phone number, which is available outside of working hours if they wish to speak directly with the person on call.

Furthermore, Anglo American Educational Services work closely with the Metropolitan Police, and Health and Safety Officials to ensure that all their properties conform to current Health and Safety Guidelines. All Anglo American maintenance staff can be easily identified by their ID tags, and any external maintenance workers are accompanied at all times whilst on Anglo American Property.

Students will be briefed on safety practices in their pre-departure orientation guide, as well as during their on-site orientation meeting in London. Although safety issues rarely arise during one our study abroad programs, there are certain "common sense" precautions that students are encouraged to take in order to stay safe, such as making sure to lock all your doors and windows, taking a taxi home after 10pm and not walking alone at night. While violent crime is extremely rare, pick-pocketing can happen and may be directed at foreigners, so we also talk to students in detail about how to avoid pick-pockets.

Housing Policies
All housing policies will be explained in detail during the mandatory orientation meeting after students arrive in London. Here are a few policies that students should be aware of before departure:
  • Overnight guests are NOT allowed in the apartments under any circumstance.
  • Possession of drugs in your apartment is strictly prohibited and may result in expulsion from the program.
  • The legal drinking age in the UK is 18. Please treat alcohol with respect, and do not abuse it. The police have the power to arrest and detain you if you are acting in an inappropriate way due to alcohol.
  • While the Landward apartments are fully equipped, please be aware that living spaces in Europe are generally smaller than in the U.S., and storage space may be limited.
  • Students may not move into their program housing prior to the official arrival date, and they may not stay after the official move-out date.
