Marseille (p. 1,516, 340) is the second largest city in France. It is France's largest port, as well as the largest port in the Mediterranean Sea. Marseille was founded in 600 BC by the Greeks of Phocaea as a trading port. To ward off an alliance of Celts, Etruscans and Carthiginians, the city of Marseille allied itself with the Roman Empire. Under their agreement, Marseille was able to stay independent of the Emperor, but this all changed once Julius Caesar came to power. It then joined the losing side of a civil war and lost it's independence. The French national anthem is named for the Revolutionary troops of Marseille. Marseille has the third largest Jewish population in Europe, and 25% of it's inhabitants are from North Africa, mainly Algeria and Tunisia.
