ART 332 Architecture et Archéologie: la Provence de l'Antiquité à la fin du Moyen Age / Architecture and Archaeology of Provence from the Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages* (Archaeology, Art History, European Studies, French Civilization)

English Description: Taught by two specialists: one an archeologist and the second, an art historian, this course deals with Roman and Medieval monuments and buildings in the very regions surrounding us. Students will travel to some of these sites and present their research to their colleagues in front of the very places they are commenting upon. Attendance at all site visits is required, as they are integral parts of the course. Possible sites include: Arles, Aix en Provence, Glanum, Vaison la romaine, and of course Avignon.

English Description: This is a bridge course designed to firmly ground the student's writing and oral practices in French. Grammar and phonetics will be used as needed.

HIS 345 La Grande Mutation française (1945-2005)/ Major Changes in French Society* (French Civilization, European Studies, International Relations, Business, Political Science)

English Descripton: Taught specially for IAU students by a History professor from the local French University, this course deals with French history from 1945 until today. It is strongly believed that knowledge of the past may contribute to explain the specificity of modern day phenomena. "French society has changed so drastically in the last fifty years that some, like Henri Mendras, have even talked of a 'Second French Revolution.' The course will deal with the reasons, manner and rhythm of these transformations considered from the point of view of society, economics, culture and politics."

LIT 347 Le Théâtre* (French Civilization, European Studies, Francophone Studies, International Relations)

English Description: This course is traditionally taught by a guest Professor from the United States whose native language is French. Since Avignon holds the world renowned Theater Festival every July, this course will deal with an aspect of the theatre and students and their professor will attend play(s) of the more than 700 daily performances presented during this exciting venue. A final description will be available in early Spring when the Festival's program is made public. Note: In '04 this course's topic was "Ancient Myths: Andromache"; in '05 it dealt with "The Actor in Theater" and in '06 with "Francophone Theater from the Antilles."

LIT 410 Séminaire: "Entre Deux-Langues"/ In Between Languages.* (French Civilization, European Studies, Francophone Studies, Second Language Acquisition)

Plusieurs extraits d'oeuvres théoriques perfectionneront notre lecture.

English Description: What better way to study French in France can there be than to study the intent and the resulting works of those authors who went through a similar process of adaptation and maybe even personal changes when they, too, decided to use another language to write their works in ? This is what this course proposes to examine. Complete works by such writers as: Samuel Beckett, Nathalie Sarraute, Leïla Sebbar, and Khatibi Abdelkédir, as well as theoretical articles on the matter will be studied.
