MODULE DESCRIPTIONS (Syllabi)
ASA students may search for modules and their descriptions, as well as timetables, on Oxford Brookes' online
Undergraduate Modular Programme Handbook.
READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING THE MODULAR HANDBOOK!
1. Students should take 4 modules per semester. It may be possible to take a 5th module, with permission from Brookes. You must have a total of 7-8 modules
approved for credit by your home school, in case of schedule conflicts.
2. You may NOT take double modules, honours modules, Master's modules or modules designated for degree-seeking students.
3. You may only take modules from the above list of subject areas. You may see subject areas on Oxford Brookes' search engine
that do not appear on the above list. If your field of study is not on the above list, that means Brookes has designated it as "off-limits" to study abroad students.
You are NOT required to take all your modules in just one field of study; you may take modules from different fields of study.
4. Y08 refers to the 2008-2009 academic year (Fall 2008 and Spring 2009), so searching under Y08 will give you modules that are offered in Fall 2008 & Spring 2009. Then, each module description will
say if it is offered during Semester 1 (Fall), Semester 2 (Spring) or both.
5. Know that Semester 1 is Fall and Semester 2 is Spring. If you are going abroad
in Fall 2008, look for modules that are offered during Semester 1 in Y08. If you are going abroad
in Spring 2009, look for modules that are offered during Semester 2 in Y08.
6. Stage I modules are freshman/sophomore modules; Stage II modules are junior/senior modules. Stage II modules are
generally for students who are majors in that field. Stage I modules normally have no pre-requisites or fewer pre-requisites than Stage II modules.
The Modular Handbook sometimes lists Stage I modules as "Basic" and Stage II modules as "Advanced."
HOW TO USE THE MODULAR HANDBOOK
ONLY use the search functions called "SPECIALITY SELECTION," or "MODULE SEARCH."
a. SPECIALITY SELECTION (*Recommended*) - This shows fields of study alphabetically, making it easy to locate your field. First, choose your desired subject area, then choose Y08 for Fall 2008/Spring 2009. Finally, click "Show Page." This will show you all
of the modules offered in that course for your desired academic year. Once again, Semester 1 under Y08 is Fall 2008 and Semester 2 under Y08 is Spring 2009.
b. MODULE SEARCH - This allows you to search for a keyword appearing in a module title or description. Enter your keyword (i.e. biology, marketing, Italian, etc.) into the 2nd box,
then choose your dates. If you're going abroad during the 2008-2009 academic year,
use "01-Sep-2008" to "31-Aug-2009." Keep in mind that Semester 1 always refers to Fall and Semester 2 to Spring. If you want to narrow your search results to a particular course (subject area),
you can first enter the code for your desired course, then %. A list of courses and their codes are under "Subject Group Selection." Most
undergraduate codes begin with U.
