PARIS, FRANCE - Semester Program in French Language & Culture
Placement Exam:
All students will take a French language placement exam after arrival in Paris.
The exam
will determine each student's language level placement, as well as the classes available to them, as course offerings
vary by level. In the gray box above, you can estimate your
French level based on the
number of semesters of college French you have taken. (ASA cannot guarantee level or class placement, as this is based
solely on your placement exam.)
Overview of Curriculum for All Students:
Beginner level students take a set curriculum of French language courses and may not take Culture courses.
Intermediate, Advanced and Superior level students during the FALL semester have two options, either of which earn students a total of 180 contact hours (12 semester credits):
Fall Option 1: Students take one 4-credit French Language class and 4, 2-credit Culture courses. 60 contact
hours come from language classes; 120 contact hours come from elective classes.
Fall Option 2: Students take one 6-credit French Language class and 3, 2-credit Culture courses.
90 contact hours come from language classes; 90 contact hours come from elective classes.
Intermediate, Advanced and Superior level students during the SPRING semester will take one 6-credit French Language class and 3, 3-credit
Culture courses for a total of 225 contact hours (15 semester credits). 90 contact hours
come from language classes and 135 contact hours come from elective classes.
Contact Hours and Credits:
Each elective course meets 3 hours per week. See above for number of weekly hours of French
language classes. Fall semester students attend 10 weeks of classes and
therefore earn 30 contact hours (2 semester credits) for each elective taken during the
Fall semester.
Spring students attend 15 weeks of classes and therefore earn 45 contact hours (3 semester
credit) for each elective taken during the Spring semester.
Beginner Level Curriculum - French Language:
Beginner level students during the FALL semester have a set curriculum of 18 hours of French Language classes per week, for a total of 180
contact hours (12 semester credits).
Beginner level students during the SPRING semester have a set curriculum of 15 hours of French Language classes per week, for a total of 225 contact hours (15 semester credits).
Beginner French language classes for both semesters will include oral and written comprehension, oral and written expression, grammar,
