Universidad de Belgrano - Course Offerings

During the semester, all students must take a minimum of 4 classes or a maximum of 5 (this does not include the optional intensive course). If you choose to take Spanish language during the semester, that counts as one of your 4 or 5 classes. Also, students may combine English & Spanish electives, but an Intermediate or Advanced level of Spanish is always required to take electives in Spanish.

In order to take electives taught in Spanish, students must have completed at least 4 semesters of college Spanish. Students who have taken 3 semesters of college Spanish may also take electives in Spanish, as long as they complete the 6-credit Spanish language intensive course, as described in Option Four.

It is strongly recommended that you get a total of 8 electives approved by your academic advisor, in case of changes in course availability or schedule conflicts. That way, if a class is cancelled or 2 of the classes you want to take meet at the same time, you'll already have back-up classes that you know your school will accept. When you pre-register for classes (this happens after you're accepted), you will have to list a total of 8 possible classes that you plan to take during the semester (this does not include the intensive course). We will not be able to pre-register you unless you provide us with 8 possible courses.

Classes worth 60 contact hours / 4 semester credits will meet twice a week for 90 minutes each session. Beginning Spanish and Portuguese classes (worth 90 contact hours / 6 semester credits) will meet three times a week for 90 minutes each session. The month-long Spanish intensive course will meet 4-5 hours per day, Mon-Fri.

Students can choose from the following 4 curriculum options, depending on their level of Spanish:

Open to all language levels:
Option One: Students do not participate in the month-long intensive course and arrive at the start of the regular semester. Students will take a Spanish language course plus 3-4 electives taught in English.
Note: taking Spanish language is mandatory with this option.

Option Two: Students arrive a month early to complete a one-month intensive Spanish language course for 6 credits. Upon completion of the intensive course, students can take a Spanish language course plus 3-4 electives taught in English. Students who do not wish to take a Spanish language course during the semester will take 4-5 electives taught in English.


Open to Intermediate and Advanced levels:

Option Four: Students arrive a month early to complete a one-month intensive Spanish language course for 6 credits. Students who do not wish to take a Spanish language course during the semester will take 4-5 electives.

Note: A placement exam taken on the first day of the intensive course will determine your level.

Note: Students who complete the month-long intensive Spanish course and pass the exam for their level will be automaticaly enrolled in the next level for their semester-long Spanish language class. Students who do not complete the intensive course will take a placement exam on the first day of class, which will determine their level.
