ACADEMIC OVERVIEW:
Through a cooperative agreement with the University of Barcelona (founded in 1451) and the Arcadia in Barcelona center, students may opt to study at both sites for part or all of their academic load, for a semester or academic year.

This enables students to choose from among several program options, depending on their particular areas of interest and level of proficiency in Spanish. Students at all levels of Spanish can be accommodated.

-Students with no prior knowledge of Spanish will have the option of taking classes in English combined with Spanish language study.
-Intermediate-level students can take all coursework in Spanish, or combine courses in Spanish with some courses in English.
-Students at the Advanced levels can choose from Hispanic Studies courses in Spanish and/or directly enroll in courses at any of the faculties of the University of Barcelona (only academic year and spring students are eligibile to take courses at the University of Barcelona).

All students (except those enrolled in the advanced program) are required to take 6 credits of Spanish language.

Both the University of Barcelona and Arcadia in Barcelona are situated in the bustling neighborhood of l'Eixample, home to many of Barcelona's most famous attractions and intriguing architecture.

COURSE INFORMATION:
-All students are required to take 15-18 credits per semester.
-All Spanish language courses are held at the Arcadia center. The language courses are 90 hours per semester and involve an additional 10-hour cultural component; students earn 6 semester credits for each language course.
-Arcadia offers elective courses in Spanish and English. The elective courses have 45 contact hours per semester and are worth 3 semester credits. Classes taught at the Arcadia center are indicated below by (Arcadia).
-The University of Barcelona Hispanic Studies Center (HSC) offers electives in Spanish that are worth 3 semester credits. These classes are indicated below by (HSC).
-All students will take a Spanish placement exam during orientation. Official course registration will occur after you take the placement exam, in order for you to be placed in the appropriate level of Spanish.
-In order to be exempt from taking the 6-credit Spanish language course, you must test into at least SPAN 400 (Advanced Spanish Conversation & Composition), and you must have permission from your home institution.

Volunteer Opportunities

Participation in volunteer opportunities in Barcelona is an excellent way to immerse yourself in your host country's way of life while helping those in need. In effect, this will add another dimension to the study abroad experience through daily exposure and interactions, resulting in a greater understanding of the language, culture, and community of the host country.

If you're interested in volunteering, simply ask the Arcadia staff for details and they will help you find the right volunteer opportunity for you.

The following are the volunteer opportunities in which students can participate. Please note that a minimum Intermediate level of Spanish is required in order to volunteer, as the people involved with these organizations normally do not speak English:

Cottolengo Hospital
Students volunteer at this hospital by assisting disabled patients during lunch or dinner time. This is a charity hospital run by nuns and they would love to have students help out.

Catalan Cerebral Palsy Organization
Students can have the opportunity to help disabled individuals on a weekly basis, helping them to train for different sports, such as Boccia, Slalom and swimming. Some of the athletes will attend the Special Olympic Games

International Red Cross
Students have the opportunity to assist senior citizens or disabled individuals on a weekly basis.

Teaching English at a Local Elementary School
Just around the corner from the Arcadia center in Barcelona is the primary school Perez Iborra, which gives students the chance to help out with elementary school students.
