CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:
All students must take Spanish Grammar & Conversation (110 contact hours)
plus a minimum of 90 contact hours of Spanish Culture electives. If you wish, you may
take a maximum of 135 contact hours of Spanish culture electives. (15 contact hours = 1 semester credit.)
A placement test taken on the first day of class will determine your level.
All students MUST get DOUBLE the number of courses approved by their academic advisor
than they actually plan to take, in case of changes in
course availability or schedule conflicts. That way, if a course is full or cancelled, or
or if 2 courses you want to take meet at the same time,
you'll already have back-ups that you know your school will accept.
ALL CLASSES ARE TAUGHT IN SPANISH.
Part 1: Spanish Grammar & Conversation
All students must take Spanish Grammar & Conversation - 110 contact hours (Mandatory)
(Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Superior, Advanced Superior or Spanish for Native Speakers)
Part 2: Spanish Culture electives
In addition to taking Spanish Grammar & Conversation (above), you will choose a minimum of 90 contact hours or a maximum of 135 contact hours from the list below.
Each Spanish Culture "Subject" is worth 45 contact hours and is divided
into 2 "Courses," each of which is worth 22.5 contact hours. You can
mix-and-match Subjects and Courses as you wish, but you must make sure that the total
number of contact hours adds up to a minimum of 90 or a maximum of 135.
HELPFUL TIP: Because one Subject is worth 45 contact hours (3 semester credits), it is recommended
that students take whole Subjects rather than mixing and matching Courses, as this
will make your credit transfer easier.
Spanish Culture electives are offered at Level A (Beginner and Intermediate) or
Level B (Advanced and Superior). Your level will be determined by a placement test
taken on the first day of class.

Volunteer Opportunities
Participation in volunteer opportunities in Barcelona is an excellent way to
immerse yourself in your host country's way of life while helping those in need. In effect, this will add another dimension
to the study abroad experience through daily exposure and interactions, resulting in a
greater understanding of the language, culture, and community of the host country.
If you're interested in volunteering, simply ask your Barcelona ASA Site Director for details and she
will help you find the right volunteer opportunity for you. Please note that these volunteer opportunities
are not for credit.
The following are the volunteer opportunities in which students can participate.
Please note that a minimum Intermediate level of Spanish is required in order to volunteer, as
the people involved with these organizations normally do not speak English:
Cottolengo Hospital
Students volunteer at this hospital by assisting disabled patients during lunch or dinner time.
This is a charity hospital run by nuns and they would love to have students help out.
Catalan Cerebral Palsy Organization
Students can have the opportunity to help disabled individuals on a weekly basis, helping
them to train for different sports, such as Boccia, Slalom and swimming. Some of the athletes
will attend the Special Olympic Games
International Red Cross
Students have the opportunity to assist senior citizens or disabled individuals on a weekly basis.
