Ronda (p. 33,570) is a mountainous city in the autonomous community of Andalusia. The Rio Guadalevín divides the city in half. The city was first settled by the Celts early in their history, but was later ruled by the Romans and the Moors. In 1485, Catholic Spain took control of the town during the tail end of the reconquista. The city is home to the oldest operational bull fighting ring, known as the Plaza De Toros. Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles both lived in Ronda for many years, and both wrote about its majestic beauty. Hemingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls takes place partially in Ronda.
