Madrid Fall 2009 Calendar
Program Dates: August 31 - December 19, 2009
Host University: Universidad Francisco de Vitoria


Attendance to all excursions is mandatory in order to receive credit for your Spanish classes.

August
31 - Monday - Students depart from the U.S.

September
1 - Tuesday - Airport pick-up for students who arrive at MAD airport before 2pm. Move in with host families.
2 - Wednesday - 6pm: Welcome meeting and orientation with UFV staff in Madrid. Meet at the Café Comercial (Metro: Bilbao)
3 - Thursday - 9:15am: Spanish Placement Exam and Orientation at the UFV.
Begin Spanish Intensive Course classes. The Spanish Intensive Course takes place September 3 - 30, Monday through Friday from 9:30am - 2pm.
7 - Monday - 4pm: Visit to Madrid de los Asturias
8 - Tuesday - 4pm: Visit the Museo del Prado
10 - Thursday - 4pm: Visit the Museo Sorolla
20 - Sunday - Day trip to Segovia
22 - Tuesday - 4pm: Visit the Palacio Real (Royal Palace)
24 - Thursday - 4pm: Visit the Museo Reina Sofia
28 - Monday - 4pm: Visit the "CEPI" Center
30 - Wednesday - Last day of intensive course

October
1 - Thursday - 10:30am to 5:00pm: Semester Orientation; enrollment in semester classes
5 - Monday - Semester classes begin
10 - Saturday - Day trip to Alcalá de Henares
12 - Monday - "La Hispanidad" Spain national holiday

November
1 - Sunday - All Saints' Day (holiday)
9 - Monday - Saint Almudena, Patron Saint of Madrid (holiday)
15 - Sunday - Day trip to Toledo
29 - Sunday - Day trip to El Escorial

December
6 - Sunday - Constitution Day (holiday)
8 - Tuesday - Immaculate Conception Day (holiday)
14-18 (Mon-Fri) - Final exams
19 - Saturday - End of program; students vacate their program housing and depart for home

Program Dates: January 8 - June 20, 2010

8 - Friday - Students depart for Madrid
9 - Saturday - Airport pick-up for students who arrive at MAD airport before 2pm. Move in with host families.
10 - Sunday - 6pm: Welcome Meeting & Practical Orientation with Elizabeth Harris. Meet Elizabeth at 6pm in front of Café Comercial (Metro stop: Bilbao)
11 - Monday - 9am: Meet at the Edificio Central of the UFV. Spanish placement exam. Begin Spanish Intensive Course classes. The Spanish Intensive Course takes place Jan. 11 - Feb. 5, Monday through Friday from 9:30am - 2pm.
12 - Tuesday - 4pm: Visit to Madrid de los Austrias
14 - Thursday - 4pm: Housing orientation
19 - Monday - 4pm: Visit to the Prado Museum
21 - Thursday - 4pm: Visit to the Museo de las Americas
25 - Monday - Visit to the Reina Sofía Museum
28 - Thursday - 4pm: Visit to the Palacio Real
31 - Sunday - Day excursion to Segovia (included in the ASA program)

February
2 - Tuesday - 4pm: Visit the Sorolla Museum
5 - Friday - Last day of intensive course
8 - Monday - Semester classes begin
21 - Sunday - Day excursion to Toledo (included in the ASA program)

March
7 - Sunday - Day excursion to La Granja (included in the ASA program)
19 - Friday - Saint Joseph Day (holiday)
21 - Sunday - Day excursion to El Escorial (included in the ASA program)
Mon, March 29 - Fri, April 2 - Easter Holiday (no classes)

5 - Monday - Classes resume
14-18 (Wed-Sun) - Optional trip to Galicia - de Pontevedra a Santigo; Camino de Santiago (approx. price: €180. Not included with program cost.)
23-25 (Fri-Sun) - Optional excursion to Sevilla/Córdoba (approx. price: €160. Not included with program cost.)

May
2 - Sunday - Spain freed from French control (local holiday)
7-9 (Fri-Sun) - Optional excursion to Valencia - "Torneo de fútbol" (approx. price: €160. Not included with program cost.)
15 - Saturday - San Isidro (Madrid city holiday)

18 - Friday - End of final exams
20 - Sunday - End of program; students vacate their program housing and depart for home
