Isle sur la Sorgue is a medieval island city 25 km east of Avignon. It is famous for it's bright colors, gardens and many antique shops. On Sundays, there is a market in the town that goes all day. The town was ravaged by the plague in 1458, 1628, 1629, 1721, and by cholera in 1837, and 1854. During the French Revolution in 1793, the town was sacked and burned by troops of the Convention, and subsequently sieged for five years. In 1944, during World War II, the city was bombed by the allies. The many waterways that flow around and through the town have helped to give the city a nickname of "Little Venice".
