Saint-Tropez is a resort town on the southern coast of France. It is named after St. Tropes, a martyr who refused to give up his faith. He was beheaded and his body was thrown into a boat, which drifted into the Gulf of St. Tropez, where he eventually came ashore. The city has been a famous resort for many years, and in the 1920's it attracted international stars from the world of fashion. On August 15, 1944, it was the central landing site for Operation Dragoon, the Allied invasion of southern France. After World War II, it became the headquarters of the French Existentialist movement during the summers. In 1971, Pink Floyd wrote about the town in the song San Tropez. San Tropez is great for people watching. There are many beaches in and around Saint Tropez, the best are located just south. There are some beaches that are very chic and tourist friendly, but others that are quiet and not as busy.
