Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. It is located to the west of London, and along with Buckingham Palace (London) and the Holyrood Palace (Edinburgh) it is one of the official residences of the British Royal Family. Windsor Castle dates back to the times of William the Conqueror, who reigned from 1066 until 1087. It was initially a fortress for around five hundred years. Over time, the grounds of the castle became increasingly more palatable to the Royal's taste. Queen Elizabeth I(who reigned 1558-1603) spent much of her time there, as she felt that it was one of the most secure places in her realm. Nowadays, Windsor Castle is one of England's principal tourist attractions.
