TERMINOLOGY

At Oxford Brookes University, a course is called a “Module” while a degree or subject area is called a “course.”

  • Modules labeled Level 4 are sophomore or lower division modulesLevel 4 modules generally do not have prerequisites.

  • Modules labeled Level 5 are junior/senior or upper division modules. Level 5 modules are generally for students who are majors in that field.

  • Modules labeled Level 6 are senior/upper division modules and are open only to majors in the field. Seniors are eligible to take Level 6 modules, as well as second semester juniors, depending on how advanced they are in their degree. Pre-approval from Brookes faculty will be required in order to take Level 6 modules.

Fall is called Semester 1 , and Spring is called Semester 2. Modules marked “Semester 1 and 2” are full-year modules and can only be taken by students enrolling for the full academic year. Modules marked “Semester 1 or 2” are offered during both Fall and Spring.

HOW MANY MODULES WILL I TAKE?

Students must take 4 modules per semester (30 ECTS or 60 UK credits in total). Students MUST have a total of 7-8 modules approved for credit by their home institution, in case of schedule conflicts or cancellations.

Single modules are worth 3.75 semester credits (7.5 ECTS or 15 UK credits). Students who take the normal course load of 4 single modules per semester will earn 12-15 U.S. semester credits. Some modules are “double modules” which means they are worth 2 single modules (15 ECTS or 30 UK credits per double module). You can substitute a double module for 2 single modules if your home institution approves of it.

How to search for modules!

  1. Select your Term (e.g. Autumn 2022, Spring 2023, etc.)

  2. Click Advanced Search.

  3. In the Subject field, select all the subjects that interest you. Or, in the Keyword field, type in a keyword of your choice (e.g. Marketing, Social Work, Psychology, etc.) If you don’t get any search results using your keyword, go back and use the Subject field.

  4. Important! In the Campus field, you must select “Oxford Brookes (Oxford Campus).” You can only take modules offered on the Oxford campus!

  5. In the Level field, select Undergraduate.

  6. Your search results may be several pages long, so use the dropdown at the bottom to view additional pages of modules.

  7. THE FIRST DIGIT OF THE COURSE NUMBER tells you the Level. Level 4 is sophomore/lower division. Level 5 is junior/senior or upper division. Level 6 is senior/upper division, only for majors in the field who are seniors or second semester juniors. Example: ECON4002 would be a Level 4 module. Level 4 modules generally do not have prerequisites but Levels 5 and 6 usually do.

  8. HOURS refers to the number of UK credits the module is worth. Select from modules showing 15 hours, as this is equivalent to approximately 3.75 US semester credits. (To calculate UK hours to U.S. semester credits, divide the number of hours by 4.) A module worth 15 hours (UK credits) is a single module; you’ll take 4 single modules, but you must have a total of 8 pre-approved by your home institution, in case of availability changes later.

  9. To view the course description, prerequisites, corequisites, and exclusions, click the module title.

  10. To view the course code and timetable (schedule of days/times), click the “View Sections” button.

  11. Some modules are restricted for (cannot be taken by) study abroad students. See next section for details on which modules are restricted.
