Eligibility & Application Guidelines

  • ASA accepts applications from the United States and Canada.
  • All classes and programs are at the undergraduate level.
  • Below are the eligibility rules and application requirements, which vary based on the host institution. Occasionally, ASA or the host institution may request additional documentation from you in addition to what is listed below.
  • Official Transcripts must be obtained from your institution’s Registrar’s Office and then sent to ASA in 1 of 2 ways:  1) Mailed in a sealed envelope to Academic Studies Abroad (ASA), 72 River Park St., Suite 104, Needham Heights, MA 02494. The registrar’s seal on the outside of the envelope must be intact. OR 2) If your home institution offers an electronic official transcript, your institution must email it directly to ASA at ASA.transcripts@gmail.com (An electronic official transcript is not considered official if it is emailed to you; it must be sent directly to ASA by your home institution.)
  • Letter of Recommendation (if required) must be academic (e.g from a professor or advisor at your home institution), unless specified otherwise below.
  • Students who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement:  For some ASA programs, applicants with a GPA that is below the minimum requirement for their program may still apply but must supplement their application by submitting 2 academic Letters of Recommendation and a GPA Essay. The GPA requirement is more flexible for certain programs and less flexible for other programs. The eligibility rules for each ASA program (below) will tell you whether low GPA can be considered for that program. If your GPA is below the minimum requirement, you must speak to an ASA representative before applying, as your chances of being accepted will depend on how far below the requirement your GPA is.
  • Pre-college applicants:  Applications from high school graduates who have not yet attended college are considered on a case-by-case basis, for programs indicated below with *. Please note that all the GPA requirements listed below are for current college students. A higher GPA than the minimum given is expected of all pre-college applicants.  In addition to the regular application requirements and documents described below, pre-college applicants must also submit 2 Letters of Recommendation and a Personal Statement/Letter of Motivation.  All pre-college applicants must speak with an ASA representative before applying!
  • ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE A VALID PASSPORT.  A VALID PASSPORT IS ONE THAT DOES NOT EXPIRE WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF YOUR RETURN DATE FROM ABROAD. FOR SOME ASA PROGRAMS, YOU MUST PROVIDE A COPY OF YOUR VALID PASSPORT BEFORE YOU CAN BE ACCEPTED TO THE PROGRAM.  If a valid passport is required before being accepted, it will be specified in the eligibility rules below.  If your program doesn’t require a copy of your passport at the time of application,  you will be expected to provide a copy of your valid passport immediately after being accepted to the program.  Please submit your passport application at least 8 weeks before the Application Deadline for your program, as passports take 6-8 weeks to process by regular service!  We strongly recommend using expedited service to apply for a passport, as this only takes 2-3 weeks. Some host institutions have internal deadlines by which a copy of your passport is needed.  In addition, for some ASA programs, you will need to apply for a Student Visa immediately after being accepted, and you can’t apply for a Visa without a valid passport.  If you don’t have a valid passport yet, please call ASA at 617-327-9388 so that we can advise you on your next steps!
