Eligibility & Application Guidelines

  • ASA cannot accept applications from outside the United States or Canada.
  • All classes and programs are at the undergraduate level. Undergraduate students in good standing are encouraged to apply to the ASA program!
  • Below are the eligibility rules and required documents specific to each program.  These vary based on the program location and host institution.  Occasionally, ASA or your host institution may request additional documentation from you in addition to what is listed below.
  • Official Transcripts must be sent 1 of 2 ways:  1) The traditional way – snail mail in a sealed envelope.  OR  2) If your school offers an electronic official transcript, we will gladly accept that if your institution emails it directly to us at: asa.transcripts (at) gmail.com.  (An electronic official transcript is not official if it is emailed to you and then forwarded to us; it must come directly to ASA from your institution.)  If you have attended more than one college or university, you may be asked to provide a transcript from each institution you have attended.
  • Letters of recommendation must be academic (e.g from a college/university professor or advisor), unless specified otherwise below.
  • NOTE to current college students who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement:  For some ASA programs, applicants with a GPA that is below the minimum requirement for their program may still apply but must supplement their application by submitting 2 academic letters of recommendation and an essay. The GPA essay should be 1-2 pages in length and explain: 1) Why your GPA is below the requirement; 2) Your personal and academic reasons for wanting to study abroad at the host institution you are applying to; 3) How you feel you will benefit academically and personally from the study abroad program.  The GPA requirement is more flexible for certain programs and less flexible for others, and your chances of being accepted will depend on how far below the requirement your GPA is. If your GPA is below the minimum requirement, please be sure to speak to an ASA representative before applying!
  • NOTE to pre-college applicants:  Applications from high school graduates who have not yet attended college are considered on a case-by-case basis, for programs indicated below with *. Please note that all the GPA requirements listed below are for current college students. A higher GPA than the minimum is expected of all pre-college applicants.  In addition to the regular application requirements and documents described below, pre-college applicants must also submit 2 letters of recommendation and a personal statement.  All pre-college applicants must speak with an ASA representative before applying!
  • ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE A VALID PASSPORT.  A VALID PASSPORT IS ONE THAT DOES NOT EXPIRE WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF YOUR RETURN DATE FROM ABROAD.  For some ASA programs, you must provide a copy of your valid passport at the time you apply – this will be specified below on this page when applicable.  If your program doesn’t require a copy of your passport at the time of application,  you will be expected to provide a copy of your valid passport immediately after being accepted to the program.  Please submit your passport application at least 6 weeks before the Application Deadline for your program, as passports take up to 6 weeks to process!  Please be aware that some host institutions have internal deadlines by which a copy of your passport is needed.  In addition, for some ASA programs, you will need to apply for a Student Visa immediately after being accepted in order for the visa to be ready in time for departure, and you can’t apply for a Visa without a valid passport.  If your application deadline is coming up soon and you don’t have a passport yet or if yours is in process, please call ASA at 617-327-9388, so that we can advise you!
