University of Edinburgh – Summer Course Offerings

Students may enroll in 1 course per Summer session. There are 4 sessions offered – Summer I (Early – Late June), Summer II (Mid – Late June), Summer III (Early – Late July), and Summer IV (Early – Late July).

Most courses at the University of Edinburgh are worth 20 Scottish credits (5 U.S. credits), and some are worth 10 Scottish credits (2.5 U.S. credits).

Please remember that it is the student’s responsibility to work with their home university to arrange credit transfer.  Course Offerings and Program Dates are subject to change.

All students MUST get a at least 2 courses approved by their academic advisor, in case of changes in availability. The 2 course approvals provides for an alternate choice, in case your first choice course is full or cancelled, you’ll have a back-up that you can still get credit for.

Study Hours & Marks

The University of Edinburgh is ranked one of the 20 best universities in the world. Therefore, students should expect a challenging academic environment.  The University of Edinburgh’s recommendation is that for every 1 Scottish credit you take, you should expect to complete around 10 hours of independent study.  This means that for each Scottish credit you take, you should expect complete 10 hours of outside, independent study on your own, over the course of your summer session. This means that a class worth 20 Scottish credits (5 U.S. credits) will require 200 hours of independent study time.

Students should be aware that for some Summer classes, you will be given a reading list in advance of your course, which you must complete before you arrive.

The grading scale at the University of Edinburgh varies considerably from U.S. universities.  The pass mark is at 40%, and it is relatively unusual for students to regularly achieve marks of 70% or above (in fact, only 10% of students receive marks this high). Most Edinburgh students would be happy with marks in the 60’s (55% of students receive marks between 60-69%).
