STUDYing Abroad

Universities in London typically offer a wide range of course offerings, making it a great spot for students to study abroad, especially if they have a major that is thought to keep students from being able to study abroad.

The diversity in the courses also allows students to take electives in areas they had never previously thought about.

Also, it’s always a great idea to take a course solely dedicated to the history, art, government, culture, or any other aspect of your new host country while abroad. This can help immerse you in your new environment, as well as teach you things about your new temporary home that you may have never known or realized before.

SIZE MATTERS!!!

Some quick things to note should London seem like the right place for you to spend your study abroad experience. It’s already been established that London is a big city. Just how big though?

It’s home to about 9 million people and more than 30 boroughs. Their metro, The London Underground (popularly known as “The Tube”), is extremely extensive and can take you where you need to go in and around the city. Busses are also a very popular method of transportation, London is known for their red double-deckers. The currency in London is the pound.

Travel Inquiries

Another question on students’ minds prior to studying abroad is how will I travel? Because although you will choose your study abroad home very carefully, many students will want to use their time away from class to travel throughout Europe and see other sights.

Due to London’s size and volume of people it services, there are many airports surrounding the city. This makes travel easy. When looking at flights out of London, be sure to check the airline fares at each airport, and then factor in the cost of transportation to get you to the airport (seeing as some are further away or easier to get to than others) and factor that into your travel cost in order to get the best deal.

Culture in London

The sights and history in London are incredible- be sure to spend some time simply walking around the city and seeing all it has to offer.

  • Check out Buckingham Palace and, if timing and weather work out, the Changing of the Guard ceremony.

  • Walk along the River Thames and take in the Tower Bridge

  • See Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster

  • Take a spin around the London Eye

On top of those “touristy” activities, you’ll find you own hidden gems all around London, as there are hidden places that are begging to be found, and create your own experience and memories that will last forever. In a city as spectacular as London, you can be sure there will be no shortage of incredible opportunities, experiences, or sights to see!
