Between the beautiful beaches, fantastic food, and lovely culture, art, history, and nightlife, the city has so much to offer to study abroad students.

Barcelona has many different schools within the city, giving it a large student population, thus making it a popular place for young people. With restaurants and shopping galore, you’ll never be bored in a city the size of Barcelona. The city also boasts an expansive metro system that can efficiently get you wherever you need to go.

Culture

There are plenty of sights not to be missed in the city. One of the most famous include the Sagrada Familia, a Roman Catholic church designed by Antoni Gaudí, a famous Spanish architect. The church is known for its beautiful architecture, with its geometric forms and tubular towers, as well as its use of light and color both inside and outside the building. Gaudí said he wanted the design to have an impact on the Barcelona skyline, and he certainly accomplished that.

Gaudí brings us to the next sight on your do-not-miss list. Park Güell is an expansive public park located on Carmel Hill in the Gràcia district of Barcelona.

The park is known for Gaudí’s beautiful mosaic work that can be seen on benches along the main terrace, as well as a salamander sculpture at the park’s entrance known as “el drac”. Photo-ops are not to be missed with the beautiful, panoramic views of Barcelona and the bay from the main terrace. There is a house inside the park as well, called the Gaudí House Museum, which Gaudí himself actually lived in.

Local Cuisine

All the sightseeing will definitely make you hungry, which is when you should take advantage of the incredible food Barcelona has to offer!

Barcelona is the capital of the district of Spain called Catalonia, and Catalan cuisine is not to be missed. Tapas is extremely popular, and consists of ordering multiple small plates throughout the course of a meal. These small plates typically cost a few euros a piece, which allows customers to try a wide variety of food without fear of wasting what they don’t like!

Paella is also popular, though not a traditional Catalan dish, and you can still find it served in different varieties throughout Barcelona. You’ll find a popular sauce called Allioli served with many dishes. It is made out of garlic and olive oil.
